Abstract
Objective. To comparatively evaluate the diagnostic performance of different methods for estimating glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), depending on the stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Materials and Methods. This single-center cross-sectional study included 45 patients with T1DM (23 males and 22 females; median age, 15.5 years). Descriptive, correlation (Spearman), and regression analyses were performed.
Results. A marked discrepancy was found in CKD stage distribution depending on the method used to calculate GFR. Based on creatinine, 88.4% of patients were classified as stage C1, whereas according to the CKiD 2012 formula, only 29.5% were classified as C1, 65.9% as C2, and 4.5% as C3a. HbA1c (β=2.719; p=0.008) and TIR (β=0.222; p=0.015) were independent risk factors for GFR estimated by CKiD 2012 (R²=0.394).
Conclusion. The study results showed that the CKiD 2012 formula demonstrated the highest diagnostic performance for cystatin C-based estimation of GFR.
